Description:

Ed Ruscha (American, b. 1937), "New Wood/Old Wood", 2007, Mixografia® diptych relief prints on handmade paper, each pencil-signed and dated lower right, no. 13/75, "Mixografia, Los Angeles, CA" label en verso with artist, title and date and "Ed Ruscha New Wood/Old Wood" 2008 Mixographia brochure en verso, each 13 in. x 34 in., framed together; accompanied by copy of original invoice. Provenance: Mixografia, Los Angeles, CA, 2008; Collection of Nan Wier, New Orleans, LA. Note: In 1962, Ed Ruscha along with Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Jim Dine, was included in the Pasadena Art Museum’s exhibition entitled “New Paintings of Common Objects,” one of the first American museum shows to feature what would become known as Pop Art. Ruscha, who become famous for his word paintings such as the MOMA’s “Oof,” also found inspiration through Marcel Duchamp and his readymades. Ruscha’s work, as described by fellow artist Adam McEwen, “is so unpretentious, so un-condescending. He actually does deal with great themes but in an irreverent way.” In the lot offered here, Ruscha’s presentation is minimalist. Reliefs representing two identical blocks of wood in different life stages are presented side by side. The meaning, like much of his work, is for the viewer to interpret. It is buried in the unsaid, the relationship that resides in the juxtaposition between the old and new, fresh and decayed, pristine and weathered.
