E1000-1500 Note: The Chicago artist Edward Arnold Johnson studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and Illinois Institute of Technology with Moholy Nagy and Alexander Archipenko. During World War II, he worked for the army as a designer of training aids and materials. A talented cartoonist, Johnson worked for Esquire and other magazines. These humorous paintings of African American gambling reflect Johnson's work as a cartoonist.
