Description:

Edward Henry Potthast (American, 1857-1927), "Full Sail at Cape Ann", oil on canvas, signed "E. Potthast" lower right, 20 in. x 24 in., period frame. Note: To be included in Mary Ran's forthcoming Edward Henry Potthast catalogue raisonne. Note: Edward Potthast studied at the McMicken School in Cincinnati, Royal Academy Munich and Academié Julian Paris before settling in New York. His early paintings are highly influenced by the Munich School, focusing on draftsmanship, long, unbroken brushstrokes and a dark tonal palette. His later works mark a dramatic shift to Impressionism with short, rapid brushstrokes and a bright palette as evidenced in this painting. “Full Sail at Cape Ann” also represents his main subject of this time, leisure activity centering on the New England beaches where he summered for most of his life.
