Forbes (American-New York, 1839-1895), a series of seven illustrations of scenes of the Civil War, including A Deserted Picket Hut, The Reliable Contraband, The Supply Train, The Commissary’s Quarters in Winter Camp, The Picket Line, Going into Camp for the Night and Tattoo, etchings, copyrighted 1876, sheets 19 in. x 23.75in. plate 13 in. x 18 in., attractively French matted alike, unframed. E500-700 Note: At the age of twenty-two, Edwin Forbes joined the staff of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper as an artist during the Civil War. Traveling with the Army of the Potomac, his illustrations often focused on the daily lives of the soldiers in the field. Later Forbes did a series of etchings based on his experiences as a Civil War newspaper artist. These etchings were published in Life Studies of the Great Army and Thirty Years After: An Artist’s Story of the Great War
