Edwin Hayes RHA (English/Irish, 1819-1904), "An Afternoon in Dublin Bay", oil on board, signed "E. Hayes, RHA" lower left, 22 in. x 32 in., in a gilt and carved wood frame.

  • Notes: Note: Hayes was born in England but the family soon moved to his father's native Ireland. He attended the Dublin Society Art School where his interest in marine painting was immediately apparent. Hayes spent his free time sailing up and down Dublin Bay and shipped out as a steward's boy to learn more about ships and the sea. This experience proved invaluable later in his career; his aptitude for accurately portraying the sea in a variety of conditions was universally praised. In 1842 Hayes had his first exhibition at the Royal Hibernian Academy; he was a made an Associate in 1853 and a Full Member in 1871 In 1852 he moved to England to apprentice with the acclaimed scene painter William Telbin (1815-1873). His first English exhibition was in 1854 at the British Institution. The following year he exhibited at the Royal Academy; he would continue to take part in this exhibition for the next 49 years. He also exhibited at the Society of British Artists, Grosvenor Gallery, the New Watercolour Society, and the Royal Institute of Painters (he was made an Associate in 1860 and a Member in 1863). Hayes traveled extensively to the coasts of France, Spain, and Italy, though he continued to concentrate on scenes of his beloved Ireland. His son Claude (1852-1922) was also a painter. Hayes' paintings are in the permanent collections of numerous museums including the Victoria and Albert and the Tate Gallery. Reference: Wood, C. Victorian Painters.
