Ella Miriam Wood (American/Louisiana, 1888-1976, active Newcomb College, 1905-8, 1910-13), 'Portrait of Twins: Frank Butler Johnson and John William Johnson (age 7), sons of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Butler Johnson, East Baton Rouge', oil on canvas, signed lower right, signed titled and dated 'Nov. 6th, 1943' en verso, 33 in. x 30 in., in a period frame. Note: While a student at Newcomb College, Ella Miriam Wood concentrated on painting. Wood was one of the few Newcomb College graduates who ventured into the New Orleans nineteenth century tradition of portraiture. Her portraits were noted at the time for their freshness of color, likeness of the sitter and quality of design. As evident in this delightful portrait of the twin Johnson brothers in matching sailor suits holding a toy boat, Wood was particularly known for her adept ability at painting portraits of children.
