Note: During World War II, the United States government built a segregated chapel for African American soldiers who had been wounded in combat Wilson was commissioned to create a painting for this chapel For this project Wilson painted the peaceful but visually striking image of three African American nuns in full habits After the war, the painting was returned to the artist because of the racial context of the painting.
