Ellis Wilson (American/Kentucky, 1899-1977), "Three Fish", oil on canvas, signed lower left, signed en verso, oil on pressed paperboard 12 in. x 10 in. E4000-6000 Note: listed as part of the Catalogue Raisonn‚, The Art of Ellis Wilson, exhibition catalogue, p. 68. Provenance: Gift of the artist, to his friend James Ligon, New York City. Note: With the success of the Guggenheim Fellowship and his innate sense for the South, Ellis Wilson traveled to South Carolina in the mid 1940s. There Wilson painted the people and way of life of the isolated African American fishing community on the Gullah Islands. The fishermen, their wives and daily catch all were painted by the artist. During this period Wilson's art began to evolve, Wilson placed less emphasis on realism and documentation, while placing more emphasis on design, color and expression. This delightful painting of the "Three Fish" was most likely painted during his visit to the Gullah Islands, since it is similar in terms of palette of colors and style of Wilson's paintings from the Gullah Island series.
