Description:

Ellis Wilson (American/Kentucky, 1899-1977), "Girls with Kites", oil on masonite, signed lower right, signed en verso, 7 in. x 8 in., framed.

  • Notes: Note: In the early 1950s, the African American artist, Ellis Wilson began to make trips to the island community of Haiti. The daily activities, lively markets and unique cultural traditions of the island fascinated Wilson. Influenced by the artistic heritage of Haiti, Wilson began to paint in a more stylized way, with silhouetted flat figures and bright lively colors. This charming painting, set in a lush tropical green setting, depicts four young girls in simple colorful dresses each with their own kite. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this painting will benefit the Red Cross Haitian Relief Fund.
