Description:

Ellsworth Woodward (American/Louisiana, 1861-1939), "Portrait of Grace King", 1902, watercolor and graphite on board, signed and dated lower right, handwritten inscription identifying sitter en verso, 13 in. x 9 1/2 in., framed. Provenance: Estates of Milburn and Nancy Calhoun, owners of Pelican Publishing Company, New Orleans, LA. Note: Tutored by her parents during the Civil War, Grace King then attended the Institut St. Louis, a girls’ school in New Orleans. King studied additionally under author and attorney Charles Gayarré, writing both fictional works about Reconstruction Era New Orleans and non-fiction works, such as New Orleans, the Place and the People, and Creole Families of New Orleans. Capturing the history of the city was important to King; however, even more essential was infusing her stories with personal experiences of the daily life of a New Orleanian. The current lot by Ellsworth Woodard perfectly captures the strength of character of the renowned writer, whom the artist greatly admired.
