Emil Eugene Holzhauer (Georgia-Florida, 1887-1986), "Winter Shadows, Wesleyan Conservatory, Macon", watercolor, signed and dated "1959" lower right, titled en verso, 22 in. x 30 in., unframed. E2000-3000 Note: The German born artist, Emil Holzhauer, arrived in New York City in 1906 and studied with the "Ashcan" artist Robert Henri. In 1930 he earned the Logan Medal and Purchase Prize at the 10th Annual International Watercolor Exhibition in Chicago. After teaching for over twenty years at the Chicago Art Institute, Holzhauer moved to the Deep South and taught painting at Wesleyan Conservatory (today Wesleyan College) from 1942 to 1953. Working in a modernist style, the artist found the people, culture and southern terrain of Georgia an important source of inspiration for his paintings.
