An Empire Gilt Bronze and Marble Gueridon, early 19th c., inset circular marble top, rope-turned supports surmounted by "le coq gaulois", medial shelf, incurvate stretchers, claw and ball feet, casters, height 28 in., diameter 21 in Note: Perhaps because of the Latin homonyms gallus (rooster) and Gaullus (Gauls), the coc gaulois has been a symbol of France since the Middle Ages. The Gallic Rooster resurged as a national emblem in the Revolution of 1789, and has and has appeared on French coins, military monuments and crests even today. The cockerel-heads on this table are open-mouthed Chanteclair or crowing roosters, the most closely associated pose with the French Republic.
