English School, 18th c, pair of portraits of "the Right Honble Sir Wm. Fortescue of Buckland and Filleigh, Master of the Rolls" and "Mary, wife of Sir Wm. Fortescue, Daughter and Heir of Edmund Fortescue of Fallapitt", oils on canvas, 29 in. x 24 1/2 in., in original elaborate carved wood frames with name plaques. Little is known of his wife Mary; she died in childbirth in 1710, one year after their marriage. Reference: www.fortescue.org Note: William Fortescue (1687-1749) was a prominent and influential English lawyer. He served as Private Secretary to Sir Robert Walpole, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and was later M.P. for Newport, Isle of Wight. In 1730 he was named King's Counsel and Attorney General to the Prince of Wales and in 1741 he was honored by being named Master of the Rolls, the third most senior judge of the Supreme Court of Judicature in England. Fortescue held this position until his death in 1794
