Description:

English School, late 18th/early 19th c., ³Theseus Deserting Ariadne on the Island of Naxos², oil on canvas, unsigned, 16 in. x 22 in., in a gilt and gessoed wood frame. Note: This painting spans the cusp of Neoclassicism and Romanticism with its Classical figures from the Greek myth about Ariadne and its Romantic, atmospheric painting technique. Ariadne is depicted here in brilliant red, as she is in John Vanderlyn¹s painting of the same myth. She sleeps as Theseus is led by Athena to his ship, as he was ordered to do by Bacchus, who wanted to take Ariadne for his bride.
