Enrique G. Alferez (American/New Orleans, 1901-1999), 'Female Study for the Fountain of the Four Winds, bronze sculpture at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport', plaster bust painted blue, unsigned, height 18 in. Provenance: The bust was a gift of the artist to Peggy Tollinger, the model for the piece. Tollinger was a New Orleans artist who lived and worked in the French Quarter in the 1960s. Note: In the early 1930s, Enrique Alferez was commissioned to create sculptures for the exterior and friezes for the interior of the new constructed Shushan Airport on the Lakefront. Alferez also created a monumental sculpture titled 'Fountain of the Four Winds' that was placed in the oval pool in front of the airport. The sculpture consisted of larger-than-life nudes of three women and a man. At the time, the anatomically correct depiction of the male figure caused an uproar.
