Ercole Cartotto (American, 1889-1946), Portrait of Mrs. Beatrice Schoelkopf Penn, oil on canvas, signed lower right, 54 in. x 40 in. in an attractive period carved giltwood frame. E3000/5000 Note: Ercole Cartotto became well known in New York City during the early twentieth century as a society portraitist. Born in Italy, Cartotto immigrated to America and studied art with Frank Benson, William Paxton and Edmund Charles Tarbell as well as at the School of Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Cartotto was selected to paint four portraits of United States President Calvin Coolidge. His paintings are in the collections of Metropolitan Museum of Art, Vatican, Amherst College and Pratt Institute. Probably painted shortly after her marriage, this portrait of Beatrice Schoellkopf Penn depicts her as au courant dressed wealthy matron of society.
