Notes:
Note: A founder of Preservation Hall, Larry Borenstein, eventually acquired Bellocq's glass plate negatives and had local photographer Dan Leyrer make a set of prints from the negatives prior to 1956. It was not until photographer Lee Friedlander - who had acquired the glass plate negatives in 1967 from Borenstein - exhibited his prints of the negatives in the 1970 landmark exhibition at the Museum of Modern of Art, and published a book with the images and text by Susan Sontag, that Bellocq's photographs of Storyville prostitutes garnered national and international acclaim.
As an artist and photographer, Friedlander made decisions regarding the cropping of the images and the use of a gold printing out process which gives the photographs a rich, lush quality. In a sense, these Bellocq photographs printed by Friedlander are the product of a collaboration between the two photographers.
