Very Fine American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Étagère, c. 1850-1860, attr. to John Henry Belter, New York, in the "Rosalie with Grapes" pattern, elaborately carved and pierced crest with acorns, clusters of fruit, keyhole mirror flanked by graduated shelves, serpentine base with conforming molded white marble top, disc feet, casters, h. 88 1/4 in., w. 60 in., w. 15 7/8 in. Provenance: The Service Collection, Estate of Grant A. Oakes, Warren, OH Ill.: Dubrow, Richard. American Furniture of the 19th c., 1840-1880. Atglen PA: Schiffer, 1983. p. 146-147. Note: The proportions, mirror form, supports, and base on this étagère are nearly identical to those on the historic étagère found in the double parlor at Rosalie, Natchez. Though the crests are very similar on these two étagères, the example offered here has a greater proliferation of grape clusters and finely carved floral forms. Ref: Otto, Cecilia Jackson.
