Eugene James Martin (American, 1938-2005), 'Abstraction', acrylic on canvas, signed and dated '2002' lower right, 30 in. x 24 in., unframed. E1000-1500 Note: The intense color and lively abstract paintings of African-American artist Eugene Martin have been exhibited and collected widely. Orphaned at five years old, Martin was in and out of foster homes in Washington D.C And eventually was sent to a farm for troubled youths. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of twenty and took art lessons during his service. From 1960 to 1963 he attended the Corcoran School of Art and began his prolific and long career as an artist After spending several years in North Carolina, Martin moved to Lafayette when his Belgian-born wife was offered a professorship at the University of Louisiana. Martin's work has been exhibited at the Acadiana Center for the Arts, Zigler Museum, Opelousas Museum of Art, Ogden Museum of Southern Art and Corcoran Gallery. The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Alexandria Museum of Art and Munich Museum of Art recently acquired Martin's paintings as part of their permanent collections. Provenance: Estate of the Artist.
