  • Provenance: We are pleased to offer the Mack Jolly Estate collection of Reed & Barton "Francis I" pattern sterling silver flatware and hollow ware.

Designed by Ernest Meyers in 1907, the multi-motif pattern features 15 different fruit and flower clusters on the various pieces. There are 28 pieces of fruit on the knife handle alone. Recently discontinued, the pattern was produced in a vast range of flatware and hollow ware.

Marilyn Schwartz's 1991 A Southern Belle Primer: Or Why Princess Margaret Will Never Be a Kappa Kappa Gamma (2006 updated reprint titled A Southern Belle Primer: Or Why Paris Hilton Will Never Be a Kappa Kappa Gamma) lists "Francis I" as Number One in the "Twelve Patterns of the Southern Silver Zodiac"; it is for someone who "wants it all."

Dr. Jolly's extensive place silver (lot 274) includes fish forks and knives, ice cream forks and terrapin forks. The serving pieces are equally extensive (lots 275 & 276), as are the hollow ware (lots 447-452).

Dr. Jolly obviously "had it all" when setting an impressive table laden with "Francis I."
  • Condition: Assembled set. Approx. 30 pieces with various monograms. Some possible monogram removals. Some dents. Nicks, dings and scratches as expected with age and use. Some scattered small areas of discoloration/spotting - should professionally polish out. Knives with old blunt blades: blades have been resilvered, some wear to silvering with areas of exposed copper. Two steak knives: areas of discoloration to handles.
