Description:

F. Wieck (American/Louisiana, 19th c.), "Bougaloo or Boula Boula", oil on canvas, signed and dated "'97" upper right, 24 in. x 35 in., in a period frame, accompanied by "The Age of Steel and Steam: Life History of the United States" book by Bernard W. Weisberger, vol 7, 1964, in which the painting is reproduced. E5000-7000 Provenance: Collection of Gretchen and Alonzo Lansford, New Orleans. Note: This depiction of African-Americans dancing and playing music implies a Voodoo ceremony. In the Voodoo religion, dance is an expression of spirituality and serves as a connection to the spirit world. Little is known about the artist F. Wieck who painted this exuberant work thirty years after the end of the Civil War.
