Description:

F. Wieck (American/Louisiana, 19th c.), "Bamboula", 1897, oil on canvas, signed and dated upper right, 24 in. x 35 in., period frame. Provenance: Collection of Gretchen and Alonzo Lansford; Neal Auction Company, Dec. 4, 2004, lot 597. Note: One of the cultural forms visible within the African diaspora is music and dance. Many dances held particular meaning and could convey specific ideas, both secular and spiritual. Music and dancing also provided a means of honoring the past, as the dancers (and audience) used their bodies as instruments in ways that harkened back to original African dance forms. During their limited leisure hours, particularly on Sundays and holidays, slaves often engaged in singing and dancing. Music on plantations in the United States typically consisted of call-and-response patterns, shouts, cries, and moans and made use of homemade instruments from the banjo, tambourine, and calabashes to washboards, pots, and spoons. In the painting offered here, a group of people possibly dance the Bamboula, a dance of Kongo origin. This dance embodied the Habanera rhythmic pattern that came to Louisiana from Saint Domingue. The term “bamboula” can also refer to a specific rhythm, type of drum or any African-based cultural practice.
