An American Federal Carved Walnut Bowfront Chest of Drawers, c. 1827, inscribed and dated, four graduated drawers, convex molded stiles, turned feet, height 42 in., width 42 in., depth 23 in Note: Bears old inscription "Jacob Setley, Reading,... 1827" on interior side of backboards. A Jacob Setley appears in the 1820 Federal Census in Reading, Pennsylvania. The Smithsonian Institution holds his 1832-1848 papers and daybooks (Call No. ACNMAH 0190), which indicates that he operated a brick kiln, leased property, managed construction, and bought and sold merchandise.
