(Each artist has a spiritual homeland which is his true country?Ziem's homeland is Venice) Frédéric Chopin Felix Ziem originally studied architecture at the Academy in Dijon before deciding he was better suited for an artistic career. It was during his first visit to the city of Venice in 1841 that he received the inspiration that was to permeate his finest works. Though he traveled across Europe and Northern Africa working and painting, Ziem was continuously drawn back to the decaying splendor and energy of Venice. He visited the city countless times - once staying for over three years never tiring of it. His vivacious and energetic views of the city are among his most successful and coveted works. Ziem's bright palette and bold brush strokes combined to create images filled with a sense of movement and emotion. The present lot is an example of Ziem at his most adept; the brightly bannered and flag adorned gondolas and vessels in the foreground suggest a festive atmosphere. In the background are the impressionistically rendered Doge's Palace and Campanile di San Marco, glowing in the sun and in the light reflected from the water. Ziem was held in high regard by the artists and personalities of his day. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon, winning numerous awards and medals. In 1857 he was made a chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur, was named an officier in 1878, and made a commandeur in 1908 Reference: Benezit. Dictionnaire des Peintres, Librairie Grund, 1976, vol.
