Lot 696
A Fine and Rare Chinese Carved Zitan Table, framed rectangular top on an open box-form case with straight square legs ending in square scrolls, joined on the four sides by square scroll stretchers, shaped apron and upright spandrels extensively carved with bats and clouds, height 33 in., width 62 1/4 in., depth 25 3/4 in Provenance: Aixinjueluo Collection. Note: The Chinese master-craftsman's command of line, curve and cubic proportion as evidenced in the present lot is rivaled only by the use of, and obvious respect for, the zitan wood. The table's square lines and severe angles lend it a masculine formality which is, at once, counterbalanced by the undulating, feminine curves and ornamental carving of the aprons and spandrels. The use of negative space acts in further harmonious juxtaposition to the surrounding intricacy.
