A Fine Illuminated Quran, 1780, with pages of tissue-thin vellum and paper, richly illuminated with narrow borders of black and red, and a wide border of gilt, thirteen lines of finely-wrought Arabic script to each page, the verses each headed by a large gilt rosette, the diacritical marks in blue, red and black, the section headings of wide gilt bands between red borders decorated with turquoise, yellow and white foliate decorations, with gilt and tooled leather cover, leaves 8 in. x 4 1/2 in Provenance: The Headley-Whitney Museum, Lexington, KY. Note: The colophon translates to "Written by Abdul Allah Al Karmani, with additions from the scholars of Haj Hafeth Omar Fendi who is famous for writing in the year of ninety four and 100 and 1000" [lunar year 1194].
