Five Contemporary Gullah Sweetgrass Baskets: signed and dated on underside by Corey Alston, Karen Alston, & possibly Mary Jane Habersham. Corey Allston and wife Karen are fifth generation Sweetgrass Basket Weavers, working in Gullah-Geechee weaving traditions developed by the enslaved West Africans brought to the marshy and coastal Lowcountry regions of South Carolina. Sweetgrass basket weaving was adapted to winnow rice seeds from the chafe, which was key to the foodways of South Carolina. A Corey Alston sweetgrass basket is in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, currently on view in "Traditional to Contemporary" in the Renwick Gallery.
