Description:

Folk Art Memory Ware Vessel or Jardiniere
20th c., body decorated with fragments of porcelain, glass, pottery and other found objects, drilled base for use as planter, h. 7 1/2 in., dia. 11 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: This is an example of memory ware, a folk art tradition that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Often created by hand using cement and adorned with fragments of glass, pottery, buttons, jewelry, and other found objects, memory ware pieces are deeply personal collages of memory. Each shard tells a story—of broken dishes, keepsakes, or treasured items too worn to use but too loved to discard. These objects were often made in memory of a loved one, a way to preserve fragments of everyday life in a permanent form. Though humble in material, they reflect a profound reverence for the past and the beauty found in imperfection. This particular bowl holds pieces of many lives—bits of tea cups, colored glass, and even painted ceramic—all bound together into one unified whole. Memory ware reminds us that even in what's broken, there's something worth holding onto.
  • Condition: Overall very good/excellent condition. Interior with surface dirt from use as planter. Note some small losses consistent with medium visible in additional photos.
