E1000/1500 Note: Frances Benjamin Johnston was internationally recognized as one of America's leading documentary, portrait, and artistic photographers. After 1910 Johnston moved away from photojournalism and portrait work towards garden and architectural photography. She became a popular lecturer on gardens and horticulture. In the 1930s the Carnegie Corporation awarded her a series of grants to survey and document the early architecture of southern states. During this time, she visited New Orleans and decided to settle in the French Quarter where she lived the rest of her life in semi-retirement. Ref: Peterson, Anne, "Frances B.
