A Very Rare American Mahogany and Birdseye Maple Grand Harmonicon, c. 1830, attributed to Francis Hopkinson Smith, Baltimore, deep rectangular case with lift top, inlaid Gothic arch corner panels above pendant drops, interior lift out sounding board fitted with 25 flint glass vessels (3 broken), probably blown by Amelung Glassworks, Urbana, MD, turned pedestal base with reeded saber legs, brass paw feet, casters, height 38 1/2 in., width 39 in., depth 28 in Provenance: Made for historic Auburn Farm, Thurmont, MD. Exhibited in "Early Glass in Maryland", Homewood House, Johns Hopkins University, January through April, 2000. Note: "Grand Harmonicon" is the name that Francis Hopkinson Smith (1797- 1872) gave to his version of "musical glasses" which he patented April 27, 1825. The glasses were blown to pitch and are played by rubbing their rims with moistened fingers. Examples of the Grand Harmonicon are found in museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA.
