Description:

Franco-American School (19th c.) In the Manner of Charles Balthazar Julien Saint-Memin (French- American, 1770-1852), Portrait of Anne Teakle Smith (1781-1858), pencil, charcoal, pastel and chalk on pink paper, unsigned, with hand-written labels en verso, 14.5in. x 9 7-8 in., mounted in a giltwood frame with black and gilt eglomise mat. E3000-5000 Provenance: Descended in the Smith Donnell family. Acquired by Felix Kuntz from the Haunted Bookshop, Mobile, Alabama, c 1956. Note: Acquired by Felix Kuntz as being by St. Memin. Whether painted in France or America, the style of the hair, earrings and clothing all reflect the fashion of continental Europe in the early 19th century, which indicates that the sitter had likely visited France, perhaps for education. Her father, Isaac Smith, sat for St. Memin. Felix Kuntz acquired three portraits as being by St. Memin. The other two examples Portrait of a Gentleman and Portrait of Mrs. David Meade Randolph of Virginia, are in the Kuntz Federal Drawing Room at NOMA. Reference: St. Memin and the Neoclassical Profile Portrait in America, by Ellen Miles, 1994, and St. Memin and Virginia by Filmore Norfleet.
