Description:

Frank Johnson (American, 1892-1974), "Histah and Giant Snakes", circus sideshow banner, mixed media on canvas primed with Dutch Boy paint, signed and marked O'Henry Tent and Awning Co., Chicago, Illinois, 80 in. x 112 in. E2000/3000 Note: Johnson worked for the O'Henry Company 1934-1974. Much like other banner painters of the era, Johnson used a traditional orange and yellow framing curtain around the central image. Other subjects painted during this period were The Tattooed Girl, The Four Legged Duck, and Demon Creatures. Ref: Hammer, Carl and Gideon Bosker. Freakshow: Sideshow Banner Art.
