Frederic Crowninshield, A.N.A. (American/Italian, 1845-1918), pair of oil paintings on beveled wood panel including "Autumn", 13 3/4 in. x 18 in., and "Winter", 13 3/4 in. x 20 in., both monogrammed lower left, both in modern giltwood frames.

  • Notes: Note: Crowninshield was a landscape and mural painter, and the author of several books on art and creativity. He was born in Boston and attended Harvard College before embarking on a study tour of Europe which lasted over a decade. Crowninshield studied with Charles Rowbotham (English, 1858-1921), Thomas Couture (French, 1815-1879), and attended the École des Beaux Arts in Paris under the instruction of Alexandre Cabanel (French, 1823-1889). A beloved art instructor, Crowninshield taught at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School of Drawing and Painting, the Boston Art School, the Art Students League in New York, and was President of the Fine Arts Federation in New York from 1900 to 1909. Most significantly, he was appointed Director of the American Academy in Rome in 1911, remaining in Italy until his death. Crowninshield took part in numerous exhibitions including those at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Paris Salon. He was a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, the National Society of Mural Painters, and was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Art in 1905. Reference: Jaffe, et al.
