The ContemporaryArt Center in New Orleans recognized Trenchard with a mid career retrospective in 1979in which this work Two Types of Freedom was included Norman Boothby wrote in the catalogue for this exhibit: "Trenchard does not picture our world He takes us beyond what we ourselves are unable to discovery alone Part of his gift is the ability to make these experiences tolerable by protecting us enough to be able to grant them recognition In his most recent series of very large paintings we discover his willingness to take us more directly into his private life portrayed as a ceremonial drama revealing without reserve his own awareness of self-worth. A remark able act of generosity because it leaves no place to hide allows for no hypocrisy. These paintings are visual records of direct experiences This passage speaks to the power of the work being offered here In 1980 he moved to Honolulu to accept a position as artist in residence at the University of Hawaii Presently, the artist resides in New Orleans and Honolulu Trenchard's works have been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and are included in major private and museum collections including the Ogden Museum ofSouthern Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art In a recent exhibit ofpaintings of this era at the Ogden Museum the influence of Trenchard on New Orleans art was recognized in an article by The Times Picayuneart critic Doug MacCash, entitled insight into an Era august 25 2000
