Description:

Frederick Morgan (British, 1856-1927), "In the Apple Orchard", oil on canvas, signed lower right, with old labels en verso, 25in. x 29in. in a period frame. E45000-55000 Note: Frederick Morgan was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, exhibited at the Royal Academy in the 1860's through the 1880's. His oeuvre mainly consists of lovely domestic genre scenes and charming playing children and were always in great demand amongst the upper classes As art became more widely available for a growing public, there seemed to be a desire for images of a more ideal world whilst England experienced the rapid changes of the Industrial Revolution. During his lifetime Frederick Morgan's paintings and popular children's portraits were often reproduced in print. The artist made several compositions depicting families in apple orchards, but in this painting, lot 436, he has succeeded to create a more intimate atmosphere. The intricately woven pattern of the apple-loaded branches serves as a curtain to keep the external world out. His rapid staccato brush-strokes together with a rich impasto reflects the shimmering specks of sunlight that cast the figures in an overall warm glow.
