Description:

A French Empire Carved Giltwood Mirror, early 19th c., molded frame with octagonal mirror plate surrmounted by a Napoleonic eagle within acorn and oak leaf wreath, height 39 in., width 24 1/4 in Note: Napoleon's coronation as the Emperor of France took place on December 2, 1804. Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres completed his work "Napoleon I on his Imperial Throne" in 1806. The perched eagle on the lot here presents one wing extended to its right and the other folding towards itself mimicing the pose of Napoleon by Ingres. The circular backed throne is also incorporated into the design of the mirror crest. In place of Napoleon's laurel wreath crown the use of an oak and acorn wreath suggests the strength and wisdom of the new Emperor.
