Provenance: Ardoyne Plantation, Terrebonne Parrish, LA. Note: The Code Noir, or Black Code, was a decree passed by Louis XIV in 1685 defining the conditions of slavery in the French colonial empire. It provided guidelines as to how slaves were to be treated, forbade any religion other than Roman Catholicism, and banned Jews from living in the colonies. Many of these laws regulating the slave trade remained in effect until well after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.
