George Dunbar (American-New Orleans, b. 1927), 'Abstraction', silver leaf on board, c. 1960, signed lower right, Orleans Gallery label en verso, 17.75 in. x 25 in., in a period frame. E6000-9000 Note: Born into a prominent Louisiana family, George Dunbar did not follow his family's expectations of becoming a lawyer. Instead he pursued a career as an artist, which he initially supplemented by working as a real estate developer. After receiving a degree in art from Tyler University, Dunbar returned to New Orleans and actively participated in the fledgling art community of the mid 1950s. A pivotal moment in his career was the solo show of his work at the New Orleans Museum of Art in August of 1964. In the 1960s, after making numerous trips to Mexico, Dunbar began to use metal leaf in his paintings. The gilded reflective surfaces of the highly adorned Mexican cathedrals attracted the artist and ultimately influenced his work.
