Description:

George Elmer Browne, N.A. (American, 1871-1946), "Montricoux in the Bas-Quercy", oil on canvas, signed lower center, titled "Montrico in the Basque [sic]" on exhibition, "Grand Central Art Galleries, NYC", "Coe Kerr Gallery, NYC" and "Wally Findlay Galleries, NYC" labels en verso, 50 in. x 40 in., framed. Provenance: The Zigler Art Museum, Jennings, LA; Purchased by the Fred B. and Ruth B. Zigler Foundation and Mrs. C. A. Storer. Note: Known for his impressionist style, George Elmer Browne studied in Boston at both the Cowles School of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts. Browne finished his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he resided for nearly sixteen years. Upon returning to Provincetown, MA, he founded the Browne Art Classes which included frequent tours through France and Spain. The vibrant landscape offered here depicts the idyllic town of Montricoux located in southwestern France in the Bas-Quercy bordering the foothills of the Massif Central. On the shaded hilltop, he renders a lone figure approaching the sun-drenched village. This strong composition emphasizes the juxtaposition between the bold shadow and radiant light of the provincial landscape. Browne likely traveled through this area during summer tours with his American students. An accomplished American Impressionist, Browne’s work is included in the collections of The High Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum.
