George Frederick Castleden (English/ American, 1861-1945, active New Orleans, 1911, 1917-36, pair of paintings, "St. Louis Cathedral and "French Quarter Courtyard", the former oil on artist board, the latter oil on canvas laid on board, both signed lower left and inscribed en verso, framed alike, sight: 6in. x 4.75in. E1000/1500 Note: Castleden first visited New Orleans in 19in while traveling around the U.S. he returned a few years later, becoming a charter member of the Art League of New Orleans. he was best known for his paintings of French Quarter courtyards, of which these two works are wonderful examples. Castleden remained in New Orleans until 1936 when he moved to Charleston.
