  • Provenance: Provenance: Estate of the artist; descended in the family.
  • Notes: Note: Born in New Orleans, George Henry Clements worked in a cotton brokerage, but became increasingly interested in painting. In 1880, Clements left New Orleans and studied art at the Union Art League in New York City and later in Europe. In the winter of 1887, he opened a studio in Boston; in the summer of that year he traveled to New Orleans where he painted this charming watercolor of sailboats from the shore of Lake Ponchartrain.
