Lot 476
George Peter Alexander Healy (American 1813-1894), 'Portrait of Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900)', oil on canvas, signed and dated 1877 in upper left, 24 in. x 20 in., in an ebonized and partial gilt frame. E2000-3000 Note: The second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Alfred was created Duke of Edinburgh in 1866. In 1874 he married Grand-Duchess Marie Alexandra, daughter of Czar Alexander II, at Saint Petersburg, and the prince and princess's children were born in the years bracketing this sensitive portrait (painted probably either in Paris, while the artist was in residence there in the 1870s, or in Washington'as suggested by the stamp of a D.C Art supplier on the back of the canvas'where the Prince may have been visiting the British Embassy). Prince Alfred became Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1893, and died at Coburg (distraught by the romantically induced suicide of his son and namesake in 1899), in 1900.
