Note: In 1990 George Rodrigue filled his New Orleans gallery with Blue Dog paintings for Super Bowl XXIV, attracting the attention of both collectors and the national media. The early paintings in the series originated from and still bore striking similarity to their loup-garou predecessors with textured fur and a light blue-grey color. The Blue Dog remained within the Louisiana landscape of Rodrigue's Cajun series; however, he began for the first time to imagine them as something outside of the bayous and swamps. While in many ways harkening to the visual vocabulary of his Cajun series and previous loup-garou paintings, these early Blue Dogs allowed the artist the opportunity to expand his experimentation with color, shape, texture, meaning and oftentimes humor. A phenomenon had truly begun. The Blue Dog paintings from the mid-1990s, such as "A Taste of Autumn" of 1995 offered here bridge the Cajun series and Blue Dog series. The golden glow of the sky illuminates the strong, dark shape of the oak tree and perfectly highlights the figure of the Blue Dog against the rich foreground. The composition is a captivating combination of classic Rodrigue elements at their very best with a new lightness in hue that hints at the changing season both literally and symbolically as the artist fully embraced a new and exciting era of his work.
