Description:

George Rodrigue
American/Louisiana, 1944-2013
"Good Morning Blues"
oil on canvas
1991, signed lower right, signed, titled and dated en verso, original handmade cypress wood frame.

Provenance: George Rodrigue Gallery, Lafayette, LA, 1992.

Note: In 1990 George Rodrigue filled his New Orleans gallery with Blue Dog paintings for Super Bowl XXIV, attracting the attention of both collectors and the national media. These early paintings in the series originated from and still bore striking similarity to their loup-garou predecessors, with textured fur and a light blue-grey color. The Blue Dog remained within the Louisiana landscape of Rodrigue's Cajun series; however, he began for the first time to think of them as something outside of the bayous and swamps. While in many ways harkening to the visual vocabulary of his Cajun series and previous loup-garou paintings, these first Blue Dogs allowed the artist the opportunity to expand his experimentation with color, shape, texture, meaning and oftentimes humor. A phenomenon had truly begun. The Blue Dog paintings from the early 1990s, such as "Good Morning Blues" of 1991 offered here, represent a brief, but highly important, transitional moment for Rodrigue - bridging the Cajun series and Blue Dog series. The golden glow of the sunrise illuminating the strong, dark shapes of the oak trees perfectly highlights the dominating Blue Dog and the swirling brushstrokes of the rich foreground – a captivating combination of classic Rodrigue elements at their very best.
