Description:

George Rodrigue (American/Louisiana, 1944-2013), "Mt. Carmel's Sacred Heart", 1974-76, oil on canvas, signed lower left, signed, titled, dated, inscribed and "George Rodrigue Gallery, Lafayette, LA" stamps en verso, 30 in. x 40 in., framed with brass artist and title plaque. Ill.: Rodrigue, George. The Cajuns of George Rodrigue. Birmingham, AL: Oxmoor House, Inc., 1976, p. 25. Note: George Rodrigue’s Cajun scenes are defined by a somber palette depicting dark earth, minimal sky, and low-hanging oaks adorned with Spanish moss. The intensity of the colors convey the mystical quality of the swamp in Cajun country. People are depicted as suspended within the shadowy landscape, symbolizing the Cajuns’ own displacement from Canada to Louisiana where they became “locked in” the bayou and a new way of life. The subjects glow against the dark foliage like ghosts or relics of an older time. In the painting offered here, Rodrigue mirrors his characteristic treatment of the human figure through his depiction of the Sacred Heart statue, once located on the grounds of Mount Carmel Academy in his hometown of New Iberia, LA. Mount Carmel Academy opened as a day and boarding school in 1872 on the banks of the Bayou Teche and closed in 1988. Rodrigue wrote of the painting: “The irony of the painting is that I paint a statue very similar to the way I paint the people. I paint my people as if they were caught in the landscape. And the statue as I have put it here is in the center of the oak tree, the center of the mind, the heart and the life-style of the Cajun.” Ref.: “History.” Catholic High. http://chspanthers.com/Pages/AboutUs/History/history.html.
