Description:

George Rodrigue (American/Louisiana, b. 1944), "Blue Dog in Louisiana Swamp with an Alligator and Impending Hurricane", acrylic on canvas, signed lower right, signed and dated "2005" en verso, 19 7/8 in. x 24 in., attractively framed.

  • Provenance: Provenance: Purchased at Rodrigue Gallery, Carmel, California; reproduced in the Rodrigue annual calendar.
  • Literature: Reference: www.georgerodrigue.com/hurricanes/hurricanes.htm
  • Notes: Note: George Rodrigue began his Hurricane Series after the 2002 storm season, during which the artist witnessed a hurricane topple a 100-year old live oak tree in his yard. The Hurricane Series, in which Rodrigue generally depicts the storms as colorful spirals, has continued throughout his work of the 21st century, and was a major part of the Retrospective Exhibition of 2008 at the New Orleans Museum of Art, George Rodrigue's Louisiana: Forty Years of Cajuns, Blue Dogs, and Beyond Katrina. This scene, which includes elements of Rodrigue's three most well-known series -- the live oak from his Cajun Series, the Blue Dog, and the Hurricane spiral in the background -- along with an alligator, becomes an iconic vision of Louisiana.
