E10000-15000 Note: The nationally acclaimed New York artist Gifford Beal made several painting trips to the South. During his travels, Beal visited Florida, Puerto Rico and the islands of the Caribbean. In the painting "Southern Comfort", Beal worked in a modernist style using rich colors to depict two black women and their children in a tropical setting.
