Lot 170
Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720-1778), "Veduta del Tempio di Giove Tonate" ("View of the Temple of Jupiter Tonans, or Jupiter the Thunderer"), Plate no. 182 from Vedute di Roma, c. 1760s ( probably a lifetime Roman edition), signed "Piranesi Archt. dis. et. inc." in plate, 19 1/2 in. x 27 3/8 in., in an antique gilt and ebonized wood frame. E800-1200 Note: The building thought to be the Temple of Jupiter the Thunderer (originally dedicated by Augustus in 22 B.C. after being struck by lightning four years earlier) was erroneously identified by Piranesi and many of his contemporaries. The etching represents three of the massive columns from the Pronaos of the Temple of Emperors Vespasian and Titus, originally begun by the latter in 79 A.D. and completed by Domitian two years later. What remains of the temple is located near the Temple of Concord on the Forum side of the Capitoline Hill, behind the Temple of Saturn.
