Description:

American Gothic Carved Rosewood Settee, c. 1830, possibly Crawford Riddell, quatrefoil crest, serpentine crest rail, scrolled arms, shaped seat, gothicized apron, faceted octagonal legs, casters, h. 34 in., w. 87 in., d. 30 in., seat d. 24 in. Note: The faceted and inset Gothic-arch panels on the legs of this settee directly relate to known Gothic Revival pieces made by Philadelphia cabinetmaker Crawford Riddell. These examples include an octagonal center table from Rosedown Plantation, St. Francisville, LA, sold in these salesrooms on November 21, 2015 as lot 24, and also the posts of a great monumental bed collected at the Dallas Museum of Art (Acc. No. 2000.324). Interestingly, the frieze and columnar support of a square rosewood center attributed to Riddell at the Brooklyn Museum of Art (Acc. No. 79.80) have nearly identical carved Gothic panels.
