American Gothic Mahogany Armoire, 19th c., attr. to J. and J.W. Meeks, New York, flared cornice, gothicized panel doors flanked by columns, divided interior, squared urn feet, h. 95 in., w. 69 in., d. 32 in. Provenance: Hemlock Hall, Beersheba Springs, Tennessee. Note: The distinctive squared urn feet on this armoire are identical to those on a mahogany bookcase in the Gothic taste labeled by J. and J.W. Meeks at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Gothicized door panels on this armoire are very similar to those of the armoire illustrated in plate 28 of the well-known Meeks “Broadside.” A similar armoire sold in these rooms on Feb. 23, 2008 as lot 833.
